The number of reported deaths related to the coronavirus has reached a new high in Germany. Within one day, German public health departments transmitted 962 new deaths to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), according to RKI figures released Wednesday morning.
In addition, 24,740 new infections were reported. Last Wednesday (Dec. 16), 27,728 new infections and the previous high of 952 deaths had been recorded. The peak of 33,777 reported infections had occurred on Friday, but this included 3,500 subsequent reports.
The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to the health authorities within seven days (seven-day incidence) fell slightly to 195.1 by Wednesday. A peak of 197.6 had been reached the day before. The highest value by far reached Saxony: There, the seven-day incidence is 414.1, more than twice as high as the national average. It is followed by Thuringia with a value of 319.6. The lowest value is recorded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 96.3.
The number of deaths had recently been trending upward, which was also expected after the steep rise in new infections. The total number of people who have died from or involving a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 27,968 by Wednesday.
The RKI counts 1,554,920 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the pandemic began (as of Dec. 23, 00:00). It is estimated that around 1,160,100 people have now recovered.
The nationwide seven-day R value was 0.95 (previous day: 0.98), according to the RKI situation report Tuesday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 95 more people. The value represents in each case the infection occurrence 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the incidence of infection is decreasing.
